Ethernet: the $20 fix that embarrasses plan upgrades

Before blaming your plan, look at the last three metres. Wi-Fi adds latency, jitter and random drops — walls, distance and the neighbours' networks all interfere — and it's responsible for a huge share of "my internet is bad for gaming" complaints. A cheap Ethernet cable from router to PC or console is routinely the biggest single improvement a gamer can make, at any plan tier. Can't run a cable?   • Test wired, at night. Run a speed test with latency/jitter over Ethernet during peak hours — that's your true baseline, not the 11am Wi-Fi number.

  • Read the ping, not the Mbps. Under 30ms and steady? Your connection is fine; any remaining lag is the game, the server or the PC. Over 50ms and jumpy on a wired test? Keep going.

  • Check your tech. Find out if you're on FTTN copper and whether a free FTTP upgrade is available at your address.

  • Pattern-match the pain. Bad only in the evenings = congestion → better provider. Bad always = technology or line fault → upgrade path or fault report. Bad only on Wi-Fi = you already know the answer.

  • Right-size the tier. Solo or duo: NBN 50. Busy house or streamer: NBN 100+. Nobody needs gigabit for the game itself.
